My son (a supremely picky eater) loves Fujis. They’re crispy and their flavor is consistent.

I like Fuji - it’s lighter but stays crispy in storage and is nicely sweet

Ginger Gold is another rare varietal we can get in the fall - it has a spicy, gingery, tart flavor

Other than those, I like finding weird “heritage varieties” that show up, just for the new flavors.

My absolute fave is Macoun - it’s sweet and a little tart, and crisp, but it doesn’t keep well and I don’t think it grows outside of New England.

I also like McIntosh (the forebear of Macouns) - those are easier to find - when they’re fresh they’re crisp and sweeter.

I live in traditional MA apple country, and my high school job was at a yuppie food store / apple farm - I can go on far too long.

A really fresh, crisp Macoun apple. Preferably straight off the tree in early October.
