Phobos appears irregular and shadowed against the softly rust-colored Martian surface. Olympus Mons is a vast, circular shield volcano with gently sloping sides and a well-defined summit caldera at its center. Its broad base spans a large portion of the Martian surface, and subtle ridges can be seen radiating outward. The caldera appears slightly depressed, ringed by multiple nested collapse pits, giving it a rugged, textured look amid the surrounding smooth plains.
