Because there are a lot of people who say absurd things about Obama online and those same people are basically immune to argument and evidence. That leads to conversations about him getting really tiresome unless you are willing to curate them.

"Yes with people that might criticize Obama’s legacy."
There is no reason to think that is what he meant unless you are just hellbent on being offended. I am fairly sure he disagrees with some of the policy decisions Obama made and has talked about that.

Why do they have to be judged as a whole? Why can't they be judged separately and as a whole? In fact, wouldn't you have to judge them separately first in order to have a basis to judge them together?

It means he doesn't want to discuss with certain kinds of people who will respond in certain ways and he anticipates them showing up.

Oh yeah, I missed that detail. Thanks

This looks like the peak comes from those who are currently 42-50. That is the tail end of Gen X and the beginnings of Gen Y (Millennials). Is there data about whether younger Gen Xers are more conservative than older Gen Xers? If not, I think it might have something more to do with cultural factors

I think it happened after Yglesias turned into a full time troll and they lost a lot of their original writers, along with most of the readership. Needed to monetize those left behind.

I would like to recommend the Earthsea Cycle. It grows with you. Starts as young adult fiction (though much better written than most young adult fiction, and written before it was a recognized genre) and over the course of the series matures into some great books by the end.

Have you considered blocking him?

I think your first response to him was better. Keep it short and unsatisfying for him and he will go away and find someone he can get a rise out of. That is why he switches what he is supposed to be an expert in every few years

You have lost track of what genuine political debate is, and how to make progress in policy focused activism. You should take a break.

Does 'getting it' mean realizing that prior to deregulation, when the prices were higher in real terms, most of the people who dress poorly were priced out of air travel?

I see. I think we probably fee similar ways, but just express it differently. I have a favorable view of the movie, but it isn't fun and it normally leaves me in a more dour mood.

Are you under the impression that the reason people love that movie is because they like Kane?

The catch and kill is the payment. It is the payment in the form of a service.

Being a Senator from New York state does not mean you currently live in New York City.

To be clear I do not mean this is a reason to stop opposing them. This is a reason to prepare for the worse things to come.

I wonder if the plan is partly to keep sending ICE out there to see how hated they are, so that when the time comes that Trump or his successor has lost an election, ICE agents will believe it when they are told they will all be put in prison by Democrats. Then they are the soldiers for the coup.

I think the religious parallels mean it is a cut above the Synder Cut. Still mediocre. Soundtrack is fantastic.

I don't know why more professors don't enforce behavior rules that most of us put in our syllabi. It is not that hard. Enforcing basic professional norms on adults should not be a controversial or difficult action.

You already knew this? Oh man, you should have published how you knew it. Apparently you could get a lot of attention and professional credibility for doing so. You would have to worry about snarky people online devaluing your work, but they don't matter.

Nope, it was clear to a lot of us before the invasion and there were news stories, especially in the Guardian, disproving key elements of the administration's case.

What do you mean by 'everyone'? It was widely disputed in public. Also once the stories started coming out about the holes in Powell's presentation at the UN, it became very clear that whether or not he had them, the administration didn't have good evidence he did.

A lot of people huh?
Got names? Or citations?
Anyway, that was not the part of your historically ignorant claim I was focusing. No one thought the USSR was working on their own bomb during WWII.

06.09.2025 18:48 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

No, they did not, as everyone knew the Soviet Union was fighting for its life and had no industrial resources to spare for something as massive as the Manhattan project. They were worried about the Nazis, not Russia. You should rethink faith in your own feeling of certainty.

I don't know if you are trying to be sarcastic, but on the off chance you are not, yes it is very much not enough to be right.

I would say that it makes sense to refer to what you are talking about as 'speculative bubbles' where 'bubbles' applies more widely to any overpriced asset whose price you think is about to crash.

15.08.2025 18:51 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

I think the idea behind the use of the word is that bubbles get bigger than is sustainable and so are bound to pop. I think the use of the term is older than economics as a science, and so the formal definition is the regimentation (and replacement) of the older one.

Why would Soviet and modern China be the standards for someone attracted to a Marxist ideology? I have never met (in person) a Marxist who didn't treat both regimes as betrayers of Marx's vision. This is where the joke 'true communism has never been tried' comes from.
