A bad President, for
instance, has the power to do what? What can he not do? If he wanted to
revolutionize this government, he could easily do it with this ponderous
power; it would be an auxiliary power. He could cry β€œhavoc, and let slip the
dogs of war,”29 and say to the conspirators: β€œI am with you. If you
succeed, all is well. If you fail, I will interpose the shield of my pardon, and
you are safe. If your property is taken away from you by Congress, I will
pardon and restore your property. Go on and revolutionize the government;
I will stand by you.” The bad man will say or might say this. I am not sure
but we have got a man now who comes very near saying it. Let us have done
with this pardoning power. We have had enough of this. Pardoning! How
inexpressibly base have been the uses made by this powerβ€”this beneficent
power. It has been that with which a treacherous President has trafficked.
He has made it the means of securing adherents to himself instead of
securing allegiance to the government.

very fun to read frederick douglass accurately describe the problem with the pardon power in 1867

A cartoon showing various activity at an airport, including an extorted luxury jet, an exploding X rocket, a ketamine enthusiast wheeling a barrow of money to his plane, many ICE officers -- some taking people to an El Salvador plane, another with a zip-tied child being blocked by a federal judge -- scientists boarding a plane to Europe, a medical self-educator covered with pox, and more. All the people are represented by various animals. The story is made in the style of a Richard Starry children's book. Alt text borrowed from Mastodon..

Screenshot from article that reads: Black students experienced perhaps the most significant one-year shift. At the 76 schools that previously considered race in admission but no longer do, the average share of Black students dropped from 6.4% in fall 2023 to 5.3% in fall 2024, the lowest level in the data collected since at least 2015.

Been helping the folks at CBS news think through admissions data in a post-sffa world. They collected the largest dataset so far of uni's fall 2024 enrollment by race (and standardized it). Caveat caveat caveat, the clearest trend is:

I think what typically happens in these situations is that municipalities negotiate a much higher price for the property they are selling because they are going to miss out on the tax revenue for years to come. Rather than levy a tax that does not sunset.

Newark tries again to enact UD student head tax The city of Newark is seeking to impose a head tax on University of Delaware students in order to help pay for services for the school.

This article is good background (except that it bizarrely claims the university only became tax exempt in 1915. That’s when β€œtax exempt” status became available, but it was a nonprofit corp not paying a tax for most of its history before that)

SAS has some available macros for making codebooks automatically. If your metadata is in good shape (variables are labeled and have formats assigned), you get a nice file.
