Since I no longer have it, I’ve recreated Dio’s Character Profile from scratch, recalling the time when I started JoJo Part 1. Depicting Dio as someone who always surpasses Jonathan was a critical point in Part 1. I wanted to create a character who embodies the "attractiveness of evil." Shonen manga has a tradition of "attractive villains," like Mitsuru Hanagata rivaling Hyuma Hoshi in Star of the Giants. Inspired by foreign stars and imagining Dio's personal background, I developed him as a "beautiful, charismatic young man." The name "Dio" contrasts with Jonathan Joestar's "JoJo," not using a rounded sound and having voiced consonants. "Dio" carries the Italian meaning of "god," evoking omnipotence. The name also felt familiar because of rock musician Ronnie James Dio. For Dio’s visual design, I made him tall (around 185 cm) with a sexy build. His blond hair and green eyes contrasts Jonathan. Like traditional villains, his eyes are slightly slanted upward, and when he smiles, dimples and fangs appear. He's popular with girls but has a controlling nature rather than loving anyone himself. Writing down notes like these helped bring Dio's character to life visually. Next came his family background. I always imagine a character’s upbringing, even if it’s not depicted in the manga. Jonathan, a nobleman’s son, grows up in comfort aside from losing his mother early. In contrast, Dio’s childhood is miserable. His mother also dies early, but Dio suffers abuse from his hopeless, alcoholic father. To add complexity, instead of loving his mother and hating his father, Dio also looks down on his mother for devoting herself to such a dreadful man. While not shown in the manga, this unseen background informs how Dio would act in any situation. Dio’s rise above his unhappy upbringing isn’t just due to ambition; adding extraordinary talent made him more compelling. Though he couldn't attend school, I made him a boy genius, so intelligent that he didn't need formal education.
