It feels magical but fleeting.

An image from one of the best snow days I've experienced in Joshua Tree National Park. I was postholing in 1-2 ft of snow in certain areas. I also saw snow at the park 2 weeks ago, not quite as impressive, but nice to see the rare scene.

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM. A large flock of snow geese sits in a green field. Behind them is a line of winter trees and a flock of sandhill cranes flying in to land. Behind that is a bank of low-lying misty cloud, then a dark desert mountain ridge, then a sky of winter cumulus.

Desert National Wildlife Refuge, NV: Low angle golden sunlight reveals the textures of a vast desert landscape with many layers of barren, intricately eroded hills and mountains stretching into blue distance, under a sky of both somber blue and pale yellow clouds.

Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge, ID: Marshy wetlands on a flat valley floor contain a pool of water interrupted by grasses. Further back are a number of golden autumn cottonwood trees, some of which are reflected in the pool. Dark confers dominate a ridge on the left, while to the right we see the valley stretch towards a steep blue mountain in the distance.

Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge, NV: A range of treeless mountains whose upper slopes are white with snow catches orange/pink sunset light. A small group of clouds just above the mountains is also illuminated orange and pink, while above is a light blue sky. Below the mountains we see an extensive marsh with abundant grass and some open water, which is reflecting the sunset clouds.

Public lands celebration #4: National Wildlife Refuges! Some are tiny, some are huge; some are next to cities, some remote; some heavily managed, some wild; some watery, some desert. But they're all worth caring about.

Early morning in Yosemite Valley. I got to this area after I calmly (as much as I can muster) walked past a group of 3 black bears trying to break into a trashcan. We looked at each other briefly then went about our business.

The detailed one takes the edge for me. Makes the image more abstract and immersive.
