#EU leaders should never belittle role of int'l law or apply it selectively - as they've done since #USA/#Israel's strikes on #Iran & retaliatory strikes on neighboring countries.
It goes against #EU values & its long-term interests.

Thinking of the climate scientist who recently posted here how helpful Claude was and asked if there was a European alternative ๐ค Surely if it is EU made, it can't be evil? It is not like we have our own freaks that get excited about incarcerating & drowning ppl (Frontex et al?).

This applies to everything. Ppl feel it's good on what they don't know well cause it is made to look like it knows + our assumptions of technology. When one points out this then ppl will say: ofc you need to check it. But... if you don't know the topic or coding well, well...

Participated at a deliberative assembly (Leiden) on FAIR assessment re:GenAI. Plagiarism was not mentioned as an issue, the focus was "when is it fair to use it as students & lecturers." I get that ppl are desperate cause they have to grade, but a more fundamental discussion was avoided.

A friend in China messaged me on WeChat. โWhat are your thoughts on the plagiarism scandal?โโWhat scandal?โ I...
when you are an author (or a student) putting in texts even "just for editing" into gen-AI, you are at risk of plagiarism bec this is how the algorithm works. in old-fashioned academic integrity lingo, you participate a mass "collusion". we end up with 30 essays with the same structure & argument

Do they say how would AI add to the quality? Cause the experiences on the floor do not support that, not to mention what it means in use (and capture) of resources.

I have seen a lot of cursed stuff in my time in academia but this is among the *most* cursed.
Grammarly is generating miniature LLMs based on academic work so that users can have their writing โreviewedโ by experts like David Abulafia, who died less than two months ago.

That thread is so funny. I have USian colleagues (among them a professor of history) in the EU who use the term to refer to themselves. Yet in this moment in history some folk need to feel offended by it and inform *everybody* (obv adding how rational they are). LOL

#NewAcq: the #poem 'Jeroentje 9 voor, 9 na' by Jan Vanhaelen (1972). The text, on little sheets of paper, has been added to a jar of pickled gherkins. ๐ซ ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ

Maybe itโs because Iโm a colonial historian but so many of these white nation states seem to behave exactly like they did in the 19th century: โyour leaders arenโt right for you,โ โweโre only killing you/colonizing you/installing puppet leaders for your own goodโ

Text that reads, "what if, rather than talking about AI broadly, which includes a wide range of technologies that have existed long before ChatGPTโs 2022 launch and that have a variety various functionalities, purposes, and implications, we use more specific terms like โ(text/image/code) generative AI,โ โLLMs,โ or โchatbotsโ? What if rather than talking about โAIโ writing, we identified LLM outputs as โsynthetic text,โ โsynthetic media,โ or simply โoutputโ? What if we stopped saying that LLMs can โreadโ or โthink,โโwhich they canโtโand instead described what is occurring in these moments as โprocessingโ? What if, rather than โhallucination,โ we used โinaccuracy,โ โerror,โ โmisinformation,โ or even โdisinformationโ? How might we, as rhetoricians and as computers and writing scholars, use our expertise to more critically study the discourses and rhetorics that are used to discuss these products, in ways that go beyond isolated experiences and single use cases, to analyze the broader social, political, and global contexts in which generative AI is embedded, including how it might function to โreinforce dominant ideologies and power structuresโ? And how might we then build systems and infrastructures that meaningfully take up what we find from such analyses?"
In this talk, I interrogated the use of the word "critical" in conversations about generative AI in education, and argue for care and precision in how we talk about these products. wacclearinghouse.org/docs/proceed...
