I suspect the ballroom is a cover for a big beautiful bunker. The gold plated ballroom is just a bonus.

Some ruuvi tags ( ruuvi.com/ruuvitag/ ) in the AC inlet and outlet and I now have a nice influx graph of delta-T. A nice, straight forward, atomic project is good for the head sometimes.

My electrician ran CAT5 to my doorbell and then cut all but two pairs and just ran 24VAC on the two pairs? Anyway, turns out you can run a Reolink POE doorbell on just two pairs doing mode A POE and fast Ethernet, so I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.

The definition of foolishness is where you have a pc psu with insufficient hold up time and you plug one line interactive ups into another line interactive ups and expecting it to improve the situation, heh.

One of the things that has pretty annoying is that if you have any kind of bullshit meter, if you have anything inside of yourself that doesn’t enjoy being lied to, the last couple of years of almost every area of public life have been driving you up a fucking wall

RIP Jim Lovell. Famously a gentleman and a nice guy, piloted the first manned orbit of the moon on Apollo 8, despite no manned mission beyond LEO before. Led his crew from the brink of death back to earth on Apollo 13. Godspeed, sir.

If your shit-ass painter gets paint on your ceiling CAT6A connectors, I’m relieved to report isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush will get the paint outta the pins.

Quoting the late John Wyndham - β€œThe human spirit continued much as beforeβ€”95 percent of it wanting to live in peace, and the other 5 per cent considering its chances if it should risk starting anything. It was chiefly because no one’s chances looked too good that the lull continued.”

I also added a longjmp wrapper that prints rude things in the TTY when it detects a bad RSP, for morale.

sigaltstack(2) - Linux manual page

Adventures with @strags.bsky.social this week - if you longjmp with a bad rsp in your jmp_buf, the kernel by default doesn’t have stack to set up the args to your signal handler and will just up and kill your process. Exitsnoop came in real handy here. Sigaltstack was the ultimate fix.

Episode IV
It Was All So Stupid

Seriously, you would not believe how stupid it was. Every day, unrelentingly, just the dumbest stuff by the absolute worst people. And what made it worse was knowing that we’d brought this on ourselves.

"WE'VE ARRANGED A society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?"
"Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along."

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.

GNU ld’s -wrap is neat. For ex to log a stack trace when you’re about to exit() because something deep in your program is being a dick and calling exit on you - using β€”wrap it maps all calls to exit to __wrap_exit, which you can then define yourself to do whatever you want, and then call __real_exit
