Gotta love finding examples of misleading graphs online. (I also kinda forgot Padlet existed but it was great for collecting everyone's examples in Stats class today)

Survived day one of year 15 of teaching! We did some mathequalslove classics: Twelve Envelopes Puzzle, Build It, and Broken Circles today. On to day two tomorrow!
19.08.2025 21:57 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It was K-12, so we had a huge number of different strategies. Fun to see everyone's thinking (and to see how our strategies matched up with the ones Robert had in his presentation) -- obviously anticipating thinking pays off!

29.05.2025 13:20 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It was "how much of a stick of butter do you need for 1/3 of a cup?" So not in a "fill in the boxes" way, but in the sense that there are a lot of ways to think about getting to a result. We were talking about the 5 practices, selecting & sequencing work (& nudging students to show clear work).
29.05.2025 13:20 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Kicked off the summer with an Open Middle workshop! I'm making it a goal to prep at least 2 activities per course over the summer! Good reminder: most of the *computation* you're taught in K-12 math never gets used, but the conceptual thinking and problem-solving does! #iteachmath
28.05.2025 22:06 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Students are asked to ask a question about the lesson or to write an example that demonstrates their understanding.
This is always my favorite slide in my flipped classroom lessons. I love how students get braver about trying to write an example by the end of the year. #iteachmath
08.05.2025 11:41 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0While I love free food & jeans passes, all I ever *really* want for teacher appreciation week is for someone to tell me (in a note, to my face, etc.; NOT in a mass email) that I'm doing a good job & that my hard work is seen and appreciated.
06.05.2025 20:52 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0If anyone in/near MO is looking for a job for next year, come work at my school!
22.04.2025 21:29 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0A little arts and crafts in Calculus today to visualize the slicing method for volume. #iteachmath
22.04.2025 20:11 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0The students have two distinctive versions for cosine: "caus" or "cOs"! Cosecant might be the worst though, since there's no way to say csc and sometimes they try get away with saying each individual letter "c-s-c". It makes me a little crazy!
11.04.2025 22:47 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Today I wrote the statement: "Days without mangling the name of a trig function: 0" on my board and told them if we got up to a count of 8, I'd give them a test bonus point. A cot is a collapsible bed, it's not a trig function. 😂 #iteachmath
11.04.2025 21:06 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0More examples -- On these ones I wrote everything in black, and groups moved around the room and had to add at least three things to each topic (and check the rest of the work).
06.04.2025 22:35 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0This one I printed the typed stuff and they wrote the rest. I sometimes just write the bubble on the whiteboard in advance and they add to it but I had a lot and didn't want to write it up 5 times. I usually start with a graphic organizer/mind map with some prompts that they expand on.
06.04.2025 22:35 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0I like doing guided summaries before quizzes & tests to help tie all the pieces together and refresh students' memory. Different colored marker for each group member, I write notes in red as I walk around and they fix if needed. #iteachmath
05.04.2025 23:58 — 👍 4 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Just your reminder that ChatGPT is actually terrible at math and will mess up the answers if you ask it to write you a problem set. My failure to double-check when I was in a hurry did lead to a good talk with my students about AI. 🤣 #iteachmath
12.02.2025 20:47 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Finished up our polynomial and rational functions unit by making an Instagram profile for a polynomial function (featuring some rational "friends"). Always one of my favorites! I love their creativity. #iteachmath
08.02.2025 12:57 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Our tree is looking pretty great this year! My College Algebra students did a great job explaining some math concepts with their holiday ornament projects. #iteachmath
