Another thing I've heard is that in US cons it's actually easier to hook up with people and end up in a random room party than it is here in Europe, if that's interesting for you.

From what I understand, EF is not a great first time convention as it's way too large, and too difficult to connect with people. Smaller conventions such as Fauntastic in France or GLC in Switzerland may be more fun for a start.
