Using the threat of calling immigration officials on workers as a form of intimidation and control is an egregious form of retaliation that has long been used by unscrupulous employers. Oregon law protects these workers.

So when he was talking about the quality of the zipper and needing to “let it hang” he’s talking about just literally whipping out 🤠😭😭

I say a lot of things are “unbelievable” that are probably not actually unbelievable. But finishing this legislative session without any transportation bill whatsoever, after preparing for it as the top priority long before the session started, that *is* unbelievable.

We need to have some conversations about what’s going on in Salem and how to move forward. There is a theme of under-resourcing children, which is a troubling sign for our future!

Republicans are not interested in governing. This has been obvious for a long time. And yet, Dems compromise and compromise (enraging their own voters and constituents) only to get the finger in the end. We need new tactics. New reps. A new party. New everything. New anything.

Right? I think a lot of OWFP folks register for the primaries and then switch back after the primaries.

I am as close as I have ever been to registering with the Oregon Working Families Party.

When we won a supermajority in the legislature, I thought we might use that to show the country what we can do when we have power. I feel deeply disappointed about the state of Oregon politics right now. Underfunding education, attacking preschool for all, and neglect transportation. What’s next?

Does he even have constituents in Multnomah County? I suspect the first point is about favors for campaign donors rather than screwing over constituents.

In all the coverage of P4A since its implementation, I’ve been surprised to see very little about the families who benefit from the program. Now, they’re speaking out (along with county commissioners and other advocates).

There are three or so democrats who do not support the bill. One of them had to be removed as chair of the committee so that it could get out the first time.

We must make it clear that we will not let our guard down and that we stand in lockstep against any effort to eliminate Preschool For All. My hope is that when we win, we will then carry this energy forward and enact universal preschool for ALL Oregon children.

We have to be ready. Please join me in signing this petition, organized by @PDXForAll.bsky.social: secure.everyaction.com/hv1y6-Q6i0-W.... The community spoke out this week with enough force to halt the legislature’s hostile, anti-democratic effort to undermine Multnomah County voters.

What happens next? Maybe the County Commission will some marginal tweaks to PFA and improve implementation and everyone will save face. Or, maybe some legislators will target PFA for elimination with better organization and funding, and more time for special interests to influence the process.

But it’s also possible that some politicians are cynically using these false claims to pursue the aims of wealthy campaign donors who don’t want to pay the tax. So, we must be prepared to not only defend this program, but to advocate for its full implementation without interference.

I hope that Democrats who have gone down this path of attempting to overturn the will of the voters—and our local government—will see the error and work hand-in-hand not to curtail PFA, but to instead pursue PFA’s goal of providing universal early childhood education for every kid in Oregon.

I am proud of our local leaders for taking that step and for doing so publicly.
I take the Governor at her word as to why she intervened. Based on faulty assumptions and outdated data, she made a mistake as to the effect that the PFA marginal income tax is having on the Multnomah County tax base.

It is a hallmark of sound leadership when someone recognizes they made a mistake, acknowledge the mistake, and redresses it. We just saw several city council members publicly do just that, rescinding a vote pertaining to the award grantees of the Portland Children’s Levy.

It is reckless to come for this program, especially at a time when the federal government is threatening Head Start and other support for the families who are most in need of support before children are able to attend public school.

The reality, though, is that it is just one of those things that cannot pencil out for both providers and families. My youngest just lost a beloved teacher who had to relocate to Vancouver. PFA is working to address this issue, lower costs for families while raising wages for workers.

Today’s three and four year olds will be the city’s tax base in 30 years, but only if we do everything we can to ensure that people can afford to raise them here. Even for providers, they try their hardest to keep costs down for families while paying their workers.

If you know someone with a pre-school aged child, you know that preschool or daycare poses a huge financial burden and that the state’s programs have never come close to meeting the need. The fact is, we need this program both to keep families in the city and to draw families to the city.
