This picture is so crazy that if you had this as a scene in a made-for-TV dystopian scifi movie in like 2014 people would switch channels because you’d ruined the suspension of disbelief.

Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right.

Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement.

This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.

Whatever you call it, this kind of support—waiting outside cages to receive those who are grudgingly thrown out of them, is truly God’s work.

It’s not even close, but once I spent 48 hours, in chain link cages in a filthy bus depot and then in an endless rotation of NYC jail cells. Those two days of hell will be forever seared on me. But I’ll also never forget the stranger who handed me a plate of food as I was spat out onto the street.

Of all the things we are doing in MN, this one is just beyond. Imagine being released from hell alone in the cold. And a total stranger has waited all night with a blanket just to be ready to hug you and carry you home. Every job we do is crucial, but this one is what restores humanity and dignity.

This is horrific. I have spent time with people who entered as refugees in the last admin and the fact that the state is pursuing them when they came here hoping to finally escape that is sickening.

anyway! “opsec” is as accessible as not sharing your password with other people and scales up from there to match circumstances requiring increased security practices so maybe let’s not listen to people who react to the concept of opsec like a neanderthal first encountering fire.

If the theory is that "vote blue no matter who" means keep republicans out of office then you can't start saying it until you can name the specific republican they'll be beating. If they aren't running against anyone yet, demanding we vote for them if/when they do is asinine.

It's so deranged to say we have to support without question the re-election of John Fetterman, a man who is still years away from his next election and has not yet cleared his next primary.

18.02.2026 16:36 — 👍 69    🔁 2    💬 2    📌 3

Like if you're going to demand I "vote blue no matter who" it is completely illogical to start saying that BEFORE PRIMARIES

Gavin Newsom has to WIN A PRIMARY
John Fetterman has to WIN A PRIMARY
etc

I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.

And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.

People talk about this stuff in terms of how much it'll suck for gaming and I hate to inform you how many MRI machines, X-Rays, all sorts of other vital machinery are just a Windows IoT Edition PC in a beige plastic box with a big magnet/accelerator/whatever attached.

The concentration camps will not only be for immigrants, documented or otherwise. They already aren't.

They won't only be for brown and Black people.

The targets will keep expanding. It will not end.

The only way it will is if we stop it. Both in and out of the system. There is no other way.

This machine that grinds us into neat little piles of dollars for the ruling class relies on your hopelessness, your infantilization and dependency. They didn’t ask our permission to do this to us. You don’t need permission to fight back! They aren’t better or smarter than you. Try something!

Oh hey look, a handy list of things you can start doing now to stop concentration camps from killing babies in the US and, as a bonus, stop this sort of thing from ever happening again, for real this time. You can start doing these things today! Get off your GD feed and pick something and do it.

This is correct. Any candidate cynically “triangulating” on trans kids is a non-starter, and now is the time to say so. There’s still so much time to advance candidates that DON’T suck.

It’s happening here now so what are you going to do about it? Because whatever you do now is what you would have done then. Who you are now is who you would have been then. Collaborator? Sympathizer? Rebel? Fighter? History will judge you for what you do—and what you fail to do—in this moment.
