I just staumbled across ELDP, Endangered Languages Documentation Programme, "creating a repository of resources for linguistics, the social science, and language communities."

For the UI, I think I'll give Window Maker a spin. It was my favorite X11 window manager back when I spent more time in X11.

A top-down shot of a small computer setup on a tan surface with some visible coffee stains. In the upper left, a silver mini-PC is partially visible, with a black USB stick plugged into its side. Below the mini-PC, a black USB to TTL serial adapter is connected to and powering a Raspberry Pi A+. The Raspberry Pi Zero W is connected to and driving a 2-relay module.
The Raspberry Pis are running NetBSD, the mini-PC is running llumos/SmartOS, and the two, slightly visible APU devices are running FreeBSD.
This is part of my weekend fun. Coffee stains included.
The two Raspberry Pis are powered by NetBSD, the mini PC by illumos/SmartOS, and the two APU boards by FreeBSD.

While in the ancient city of Kathmandu, I had the rare privilege of meeting — and photographing — the Living Goddess of Patan, Samita Bajracharya. Just eight years old, yet regarded as the earthly embodiment of divine power, she resides within the sacred confines of the Kumari Ghar, the “god-house,” where her every gesture carries spiritual weight. Each day, behind the intricately carved windows of that centuries-old sanctuary, the Living Goddess performs her rituals — serene, untouchable, and radiant with the quiet gravity of something far beyond childhood. To look upon her is said to bring good fortune; to stand before her is to feel time itself pause.
Under normal circumstances, the reign of a Living Goddess ends with her first menstruation — the moment she sheds blood, she returns to mortal life, and the search for her successor begins. Some say even a single scratch can dissolve her divinity. Tradition warns it is unlucky to marry a former Kumari.
The selection of a new Living Goddess is an intricate tantric ritual. Chosen from poor Sakya families, girls aged four to seven must meet thirty-two marks of perfection — from the shape of their eyes and teeth to the tone of their voice and the alignment of their stars. Then comes the true test: in a darkened room strewn with buffalo heads and filled with masked dancers and terrifying sounds, the candidates face their fear. Only the child who remains serene — untouched by terror — is deemed the true embodiment of the goddess. Finally, like the Dalai Lama, she must recognize items once worn by her predecessor, proving her divine continuity.
The return to ordinary life is often the hardest chapter in a Kumari’s story. After years of worship and isolation, a former Living Goddess must learn to walk once more among mortals — no longer carried in ceremonial processions or served in silence. The world outside the Kumari Ghar can feel bewildering, even harsh.Tradition warns that any man who marries a former Kumari will die young, a superstition that lingers like a shadow over her future. Yet beneath the myth lies a more human truth — the challenge of reconciling divinity with normalcy. Having been treated as a goddess since childhood, obedience and humility do not come easily, nor does the prospect of being “ordinary.” For many, the fear is not of marrying a cursed woman, but of living with one who once ruled in silence, her every word — or absence of it — treated as sacred decree.
I had the rare privilege of meeting and photographing the Living Goddess of Patan, Samita Bajracharya. Only eight years old, she was revered as the earthly embodiment of divine power within the sacred Kumari Ghar — a presence so potent that even a glimpse of her is believed to bring good fortune.

the current consensus based on genetics/linguistics is that that there were at least three pre-columbian settlements of the americas: one very ancient one ~13K years ago, one about ~5K years ago that brought in the na-dene speakers, and the inuit who spread only around ~1000 years ago

Okay, I'm going to subthread in on this post, and hopefully that will help with the hierarchy of this massive thread.
Let's talk about swastikas! Before the rise of the nazis, they were for thousands of years used as religious/magic symbols around the world (& remain *carefully* used as such today)

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.
The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.
At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.
