Folks with prior success are struggling to realize that the game industry has changed completely. It's never going back to how it was. Funding, development, and audiences have all fragmented and that is the "new normal." Only folks who have been scrapping their whole career will weather this change.

Please don't approach someone you've *tried to talk at* on social media IRL if they haven't engaged. Conversations are a two-way street, and nothing is more uncomfortable than trying to navigate *out* of a situation like that.

A boom-or-bust game industry is partially to blame, but a company not preparing any runway to pay employees for at least six months outside of an infamously capricious Tencent has to take some of the blame here.

Do not look at someone's badge and cut off conversation just because you’ve decided they're not worth speaking to. Each year, at least one person I know tells me this has happened to them and it is angering. A person’s worth is not measured through the companies they work for.

Speaking of juniors: If you see a junior — especially one who is a marginalized person — making a thoughtful attempt at being part of a group, doing all the right things, but nonetheless struggling to fit in? Help them out. Be the person they'll remember for having made them feel comfortable and confident. Juniors are the lifeblood of this industry and we should take care of them as much as we can.

To the good men in the industry: look out for the women around you. Stand up for them if you see them being ogled, hit on, objectified, leered at, etc. Keep an eye on their drinks for them. Especially for men with seniority: introduce the women you enjoy socializing with to other good people who are in the rooms only you have access to. Uplift them in an industry that constantly fails to.

This should go without saying, but do not follow women around unless you know them well and have asked for their permission to tag along. Absolutely do not stalk them. This happens constantly; in fact, it happened to me at my very first conference. This is not okay under any circumstance.

i feel strongly about every point on this list, but i feel particularly strong about these tbh!!

if you ever thought "how do I navigate an event full of friends and professionals" i have great news:

Station to Station is one of my favorite memoir games (up there with despelote and consume me) and i will die on the hill that this genre can't be measured by a metric built around a fiscal quarter

had a death in the family and was almost completely off the internet for a few days & my observation is that there is too much happening too fast such that basic facts abt the world are difficult to ascertain unless you are mainlining info all the time & doing that seems to drive people insane

taking this recommendation very seriously, thank u fellow
