Today marks the 30th anniversary of Kousaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters manga! The series got its start in the April 1February 28th, 1996 issue of CoroCoro Special under the title "The Mysterious Pokémon Pippi." A few chapters later the series will change its name to simply "Pocket Monsters."

My first impression guesses at their name origins

Haburou
“Happy” (leaf) + “fukurou” (owl)?

Pomken
“Pomeranian” + “ken” (dog, canine)?

Miory
“Mizu” (water) + "yamori” (gecko)?

Yeah, based on that blog entry it seems like this was made just for the staff to share with each other. The back of the DVD cover also says “Not for Sale” at the bottom.

I’ve actually been on the lookout for that for a while but so far haven’t seen the show use anything other than red crosses 🤷

No, the show got rid of all Japanese text at the start of the Orange Islands. With *very* few exceptions, pretty much any English language text you see in the show throughout Johto was also there in the Japanese original.

Nope, but they also don't really do milestone celebrations like that on the Japan side.

(Also, there're different ways of counting the original series based on whether you consider "Rougela's Christmas" and "Iwark the Bivouac" to be regular series episodes or not, so that does complicate things)

I've apparently seen this episode at least once (there's a comparison for it up on the site and everything) but I didn't remember a single thing about it 😅 So for all intents and purposes it might as well have been brand new.

The show actually uses recycled animation ALL the time. They've just gotten better about hiding it, that's all.

Speaking of disgusting...!

The episode ends with Takeshi giving a day old sausage to a sick Pokémon, who gleefully gobbles it up without a second thought. Pretty disgusting, actually!

I love how A) Joy just lets these children just bring in a WILD DOG to come hang out in the lobby of her Pokémon Center, and B) this wild dog apparently fully understands all of what's going on in this human-run medical facility.

It really is actually quite remarkable how quickly Sonansu has cemented itself as the fourth member of the Rocket gang. This is only its fourth episode ever!

How can you tell if a Fire-Type has a "terrible fever," anyway? Wouldn't you think their bodies would run a lot hotter than other Pokémon?

These food containers with no text on them reminds me of how some reality shows will put masking tape over the labels of brand name products to avoid having to pay any sort of advertising fees.

Though we never find out how the boss Delvil got those nasty looking scars on its face, I do love the environmental storytelling it provides!

I've been complaining for a while how most of the Johto Pokémon we've seen so far have all been depicted as helpless little babies, and while there is a *touch* of that in this one as well this episode does at least attempt to make Delvil look at least somewhat cool.

Apparently carving little figurines out of wood is a skill Takeshi just happens to have...?

Pikachu's not the only one who can mimic others, apparently!

The show will eventually stop showing meat products altogether -- presumably to avoid awkward questions about where this meat's actually sourced from -- but at least at this point in the series it still has no problem depicting it in very obvious ways.

We kind of knew this already, but Satoshi keeps his most important possessions -- his badges, Monster Balls, and Pokémon Bestiary -- all in his various pockets, leaving his backpack free to carry everything else.

Episode 150 "Delvil the Dark Pokémon"

A unique Pokémon (the show's very first Dark-Type!) gets a disappointingly cookie cutter episode about stealing food for an injured friend.

I feel like the show's been doing a pretty good job of giving both Takeshi and Kasumi moments to shine, battle-wise. The way people talk about Johto you'd think Satoshi's traveling companions never got to do anything, ever, but that doesn't really match with what I've been seeing so far.
