it’s frustrating and disheartening on both counts- partially from those fans who reduce female art to a cliche, but then also outsiders who see that label and completely dismiss that artist’s talent because they are labeled with the scarlet letter of “sad girl music”

I genuinely cannot think of a worse fate for an up-and-coming female indie artist to be put on the “sad girl starter pack” playlist on spotify like you’ve doomed yourself to a life of insufferable fans and no room for creativity or stylistic deviation
