I liked the idea of a consuming lycanthropy instead, something that Hannibal couldn't fix.

the body is burned.

the books all burned with it.

the talamasca know, but hannibal can only do so much.

he settles back into routine, and he decides to forget.

he tries not to let fire remind him of the full moon.

will stares up at hannibal in his final moments, human for a flicker of time.

he thanks hannibal, and hannibal's throat closes around the truth.

will settles, the last breath leaving him, and hannibal is alone.

hannibal stares into lifeless eyes, and is gripped with the wanton desire to throw himself to the flames.

the wolf growls and lunges, but hannibal is ready, this time.

the wolf is caught, not by police and doctors and spectacle, but by the devil himself, granting him an eternal sleep.

hannibal serves him to his guests.

it offers him little comfort.

and then, on a full moon, the wolf wanders to his door—wanders to the last familiar place it once knew; the last place it called home.

(quietly, to himself, but home nonetheless.)

another search—this time, for answers. hannibal claws his way through libraries, archives.

he finally makes a liason with a loose-lipped talamasca agent, and when he asks about when the wolf will settle back into his humanity, the man laughs, like he asked to hang the stars.

hannibal searches, for months, and finally finds will again.

the golden eyes that stare back at him hold nothing human, and his vampiric nature barely saves him.

will is more marvelous than he ever imagined.

and he is still will,

right?

hannibal makes his plans. but instead of being captured, the wolf survives bullet after bullet to escape. the raid is a bloodbath, and in the aftermath hannibal marvels in its beauty.

he starts to realize he misses Will. he wonders when the man will find control of his gift.

the reality is something else entirely—drooling and feral, a violent emergence of will's darker nature.

will remembers everything, when he awakens from the wolf dream, blood on his lips.

hannibal as a vampire of a century or two, iwtv style

instead of encephalitis, he discovers lycanthropy. a myth made real, staring up at him through a microscope

he gives it to Will.

he's heard stories—man made beast, but still able to transform. he wants to see what the reality is
