06.03.2026 14:47 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0As mentioned in the Alt text, I checked with my boss when I was cataloguing it whether it was something we should restrict, and she said it was too out of date nowadays to be particularly dangerous.
06.03.2026 09:27 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I'd be interested to do a venn diagram of the overlap between the people who replied to this and the ones who replied to my post the other week about the rubber fetishist guy... 🙃
06.03.2026 08:57 — 👍 5 🔁 2 💬 3 📌 0The Anarchist Cookbook by William Powell, 1971, second printing. A large paperback book with a black cover, a white title and the author's name in red. Apparently, these days it's quite safe to allow readers to see it as most of the recipes for explosives etc are out of date. It does also have a list of drugs, which is how I know that if you eat enough banana skins, you'll hallucinate, but I'd think that was pretty likely anyway.
On my desk today: a piece of 1970s counter culture.

05.03.2026 12:13 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Yeah, it's tricky, isn't it? I was out in a t-shirt at the weekend, being amused by all the people in headbands and long sleeves.
05.03.2026 10:16 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0It has been difficult, but at least now that the weather is improving he can get out of the house and go for interesting walks and things. I'm just glad that he wasn't more badly hurt.
05.03.2026 08:43 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Yeah, he's got a way to go, and is still signed off work for another fortnight. At least he can be more independent, though, now that he's removed the strapping from his broken finger 👉
04.03.2026 22:15 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0A good day: I catalogued 30 books (mostly straightforward), my WIP is going really well, and, for the first time in a month, I left A to wash himself this morning, which meant he could stay in bed when I went to work. He's recovering nicely 👍
04.03.2026 20:53 — 👍 5 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0I did, that was why I got some single-vision ones. The varifocals were annoying AF when they were all I had, but having to take the others off to see stuff close up got irritating too. The (expensive) solution was to get both.
03.03.2026 16:32 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I did pay a fair bit for my varifocals, but it means I get days off from my contacts while still being able to see to do things, so I reckon it's worth it.
03.03.2026 16:26 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Yeah. I have +1.5 readers for screens, +2 for reading books and things, a cheeky pair of +3s for detailed cross-stitch, plus when I'm not wearing my contact lenses I have a pair of single-vision glasses and a pair of varifocals so I can read/sew/crochet and watch telly. 🤓
03.03.2026 16:19 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Pondering, on my lunch break, the fact that one of the tribulations of ageing is needing my reading glasses to see where the smudges on my reading glasses are... 👀
03.03.2026 13:55 — 👍 4 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0First few thousand words done on this new thing (probably a novella), and i think it's going ok! I keep having ideas at work and emailing them to myself so I don't forget the good bits! ##amwriting
27.02.2026 21:46 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Yeah, that's just down the hill from where I live. I did a lot of Lockdown walks around there, and one of my regular 10k routes is up the river and the cycle track towards Radley. I am good at obscure views of corners of Oxford! 😃
26.02.2026 18:46 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Is that the ring road bridge over the Thames just after Iffley Lock? Still looks like that if so, still a repository of random crap, too! Mostly rusty bike parts.
26.02.2026 17:49 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0FYI, Front Line Assembly also covered it on a recent album.
25.02.2026 15:14 — 👍 5 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0Wow, the sun coming into the office makes it really obvious how dusty my desk is... 🫣
25.02.2026 13:52 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Dude... rice cakes exist for a reason! 🤢
24.02.2026 15:08 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I might have considered it if I hadn't left my lunch in the common room. 😐
24.02.2026 14:48 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I mean, if we must have 2 (accidental) fire alarms in a day, at least it's not raining? I was right in the middle of my lunch when the second one went off. 😠
24.02.2026 14:01 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Another fave was, during a period of queuing at the baggage claim at Athens airport, a woman in the next queue over catching my eye as she aggressively hit the ":(" button on the feedback panel and rolling her eyes. No language necessary!
24.02.2026 09:06 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Tiny bits of non-verbal communication with strangers, especially in foreign countries, like the time the Greek waiter caught my eye and realised I'd seen him almost trip over someone's free-range child and drop a whole tray of cocktails: that little smile of relief.
23.02.2026 15:26 — 👍 8 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Productive day: cleaned bike, did a wash, bought groceries, did some crochet, cross stitch, and writing, and set up the new router. 💪
22.02.2026 20:54 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Finished! Now I can get on with the bonus novella I decided I needed to write the other day 😅
21.02.2026 19:25 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Ran a sub-1h20 10k today, so I'm celebrating by scrambling the hell out of some eggs. I was so surprised, I had to check my measurements for the route! 🏃♀️
21.02.2026 14:36 — 👍 7 🔁 0 💬 4 📌 0No worries! I haven't been that way on foot for a while, but I did a 10k run up through Town today as the usual river routes are a bit wet. Oxford doesn't change; you see these "historic" pics from years ago, and it often looks no different now!
21.02.2026 14:29 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Further to this: I ran over Folly Bridge this afternoon, and that view is definitely where I said. The steps to the right lead down to the river, the ones on the left go around the building. There's a fence now, but it's still largely the same.
21.02.2026 13:36 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0It started because the person originally mentioned in the record was born in 1957, which is unlikely for a book published in 1881, unless he was a time traveller 🤷♀️
20.02.2026 20:26 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0No, I was after a 19th century engraver. The rubber chap was 1980s, I think.
