My reading comprehension is fine. I think it's your critical thinking skills that may be lacking, though. He wasn't "pretending to be a lady," at any point. He transitioned genders from man to woman for a brief period WHILE SERVING, then detransitioned due to religious views.

According to that 2013 book he co-wrote, he had to transition "at work" to get the VA to give him hormones. Eventually de-transitioned due to newfound Christian beliefs, but I don't think anyone implied then or now that his gender at either before or after transition mattered.

Why does that even matter?
