The elimination of exact text search from a growing number of services is a form of enshittification that I keep getting surprised by. It's search: computationally expensive (?) and a foundationally useful tool. Blunting it into uselessness is a shocking capitulation to the internet as garbage pile

thoroughly reviewing everything took time away from employees in the moment, but i believe it was more than made up for by the reputation the company had for always producing quality work and making everyone else's jobs easier during construction. mistakes cost money and potentially lives.

at my last job, everyone, no matter their seniority, had to get everything they put on paper reviewed and marked up by a coworker, and then the second draft reviewed and marked up by admin staff. every single page had at least 3 sets of eyes on it before it left the building.

society needs to seriously invest in quality control. it should be drilled into students that handing in work without proof-reading will fail you. submitting raw ai slop to your boss should get you fired. any systems especially involving health and safety need mandatory qc/peer review processes.

ban everyone for it equally. every man threatening women. every bigot threatening queer people. every racist threatening poc. all threats, across the board, no matter who makes them, joking or not.

i'm not saying death threats should be allowed, but absolutely if some accounts are allowed to make them, the policy is clearly discriminatory and needs to be revised.

halifax is truly a beautiful city full of lovely people and i'm lucky i was able to visit when i was still allowed to leave the country. i hope every day for the end of this fascist regime so we can renew the bonds between canada and the united states, putting aside this unnecessary hostility.

while i'm not big on christmas, being an atheist, i still appreciate boston and halifax using it as an opportunity to maintain friendly relations across the border, they send a tree as thanks for us sending up medical teams after the shipping accident and explosion that devastated halifax during ww1

exactly, like, it's actively harmful i think to be inflating peoples egos at the expense of a broadly educated society of people who need to be good at collaborating in the real world.

i don't even care about harvard specifically, but this is really a frustration i have with higher education in general. there's too much of a disconnect between how schools operate and what the point of education is supposed to be.

yea it's possible the courses are too easy, but i find that unlikely; it's harvard, the students making it thru admissions are high performers. all that should matter is that the course material is thorough enough to prepare them for whatever career they're getting a degree in.

apparently there's controversy at harvard about too many students getting As in class, and i'm frankly confused because isn't that the goal of school? that everyone does well? why would you impose an unnecessary hierarchy when everyone is meeting the requirements? school shouldn't be a competition.

I'd guess that 85-90% of American scientists would be ineligible for future funding under this law, maybe close to 100% in the R1 universities. So much for funding proposals based on scientific merit.

Apart from being sinophobes, the people pushing this have no clue how science or higher ed works.
