While dolphins and belugas are known to blow translucent bubble rings humpbacks create large, smoky rings filled with fine bubbles.
 
Unlike the loud, chaotic bubble clouds used in fighting or hunting humpbacks, these rings were released calmly, often near people.

A study published this year, reports 12 water ring or more precisely Poloidal Vortex Bubble Ring sightings worldwide.
 
While two of them happened during feeding, all involved close interactions with humans - boats or swimmers.

The ice crystals in compacted snow are smaller and more tightly packed, which helps trap heat better than loose, fluffy snow.
