The Fez among Jews in the Twilight of the Ottoman Empire Dress, while seemingly superficial, is often central to one’s identity. In modernity, as Leora Auslander has observed, “People read strangers’ use of things to determine whether they are like or unlike, with whom they are at home or not and, at times, whether they are friends or enemies.”2 Clothing serves as a “social skin” that constructs both subjects and contexts everywhere.

Stamps and Ink: Post-Ottoman Memory in a Jerusalem Archive Somehow, the stamps concretized an important record of their story. They showed how these people navigated the transition to British political and Zionist communal rule with an ambivalent mix of national pride, grievances about neglect, and questions about whether and how to contribute to the Zionist project in ways that honored the legacies of their families.
