The First Window. The grammar school in Old Fox's village was very old, established by a rich Flemish merchant in 1515. Hare's schoolroom was in the original building, and it had a very elaborately carved fireplace, in which a lovely fire roared throughout the winter months. Every morning in December, he would gather his class around the hearth, each choosing a warm woollen blanket from the oak chest under the windows, and read to them from Dickens or Hardy or the Brontës. Afterwards, Hare brewed a great pot of tea, and they made toast over the fire with long toasting forks. Those mornings were remembered by Hare's pupils for the rest of their lives. For some, that toast, slathered with creamy Dorset butter and sweet plum jam, would be their best meal of the day, ebbing the endless gnawing hunger which accompanied so many lives in those early years of the 1930s.

At nine, the Postman knocked on the kitchen door, an hour later than usual, complaining about his chilblains & his sciatica, & when he left, the long oak table was heaped with dozens of cards & a tall pile of Christmas parcels. "One for you, Wolf!" called Old Fox, "A large box! From Munich!" Wolf thundered downstairs. It was from his beloved old friend, Ulfric, a treasure chest of thoughtful Wolfish things wrapped in crumpled silver-gilt paper & slightly frayed grey velvet ribbons. Inside was a pretty card with a picture of a snowy village at night and schöne Adventszeit!* written in Ulfric's wavery, old-fashioned paw. "Best day," said Wolf, "this is my best day!" *Have a lovely Advent season!
