What ultimately helps Leagues though is the character of Captain Nemo himself; this enigmatic, restless being, haunted by the atrocities he's witnessed, consumed by a vengeful hatred of the "civilised" mindset responsible for those atrocities. He's a fabulous creation who deserved a better book.

Managed to finally finish 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea last night. Jeez, Jules Verne's books often feel more like lectures than actual stories, and when he starts going off on tangents that's when the narrative grinds to a screeching halt. It's something I really dislike about his books.

All this fuss over a person that yes, they changed sex, so what? That's up to them. It doesn't, shut up Karen, it really doens't affect you. You're not going to be attacked in a bathroom and if that happened, it's going to be more likely a cis male than anyone who won't follow laws anyways.
