I have finished my postdoc at Microsoft Research and am now an assistant professor at Northeastern University. I had one of the most idealistic academic experiences of my career at MSR. I will miss it dearly, and will carry its interdisciplinary, open, and “weird” spirit wherever I go.

TIL that my kids' school limits the dollar value of gifts given to teachers, but allows unlimited homemade baked goods and hand-picked (not store-bought) flowers, because "a reasonable person would not think that the teacher would be influenced by a gift that has no retail value”

The critiques of sociology coming from T&S people are so bad (and some of their newly published research is so much worse) that I almost feel compelled to defend the very discipline I usually criticize

ah I agree on there's nothing new in their arguments to sts, but I think knowing there's nothing new there is also something new and a reminder to sts (at least to me), which I see the value
