So I have had this piece for a long time. It's a figure I really loved and I waited because I wanted to do something special with it. I felt the time had finally come and I was thrilled with how this came out. I can't wait to keep pushing to the next piece!

She’s functional, but she’s not a typal commander. She’s a better elf commander than Kithkin, as it’s way easier to make token elves. Yuna from final fantasy is a better Kithkin commander, she at least interacts with small creatures in a positive way. It’s just a lack where it was needed.

Damn. This is such a good thread. I’ve been hyped for the return to one of my favorite planes for ages, but as I looked at spoilers, I felt a little disappointed. I hadn’t been able to put my finger on exactly why until reading this.

These are rich worlds and I would like to see all of the elements get basic attention. In the design doc when they say (paraphrasing) we just decided to under design these tribes, we didn’t have the space, that tells you everything.

The story is that we aren’t paying these worlds enough care. I was there when these sets came out, hell, I was there for the release of Dark. The cuts, the under design, the trim is to the in world sets. There will be 4 different versions of each ninja turtle, and 3 Kithkin commanders.

You can’t use the hybrids without that in your color identity (for now). Gaddok is a hate bear commander. Any of them could be Kithkin commanders, but they aren’t doing anything to help. Yuna grand summoner is a much better Kithkin commander than any Kithkin for example. But the Kith isnt the story.

Yeah, merfolk are need up in a weird middle ground. Better than some, worst than the ones that actually got the attention. Where is the full merfolk matters commander? Could have been a whole deck, could have been a few cards. It’s mystifying.

I want to do it so badly.

Love the idea and totally behind that. But it’s deeper than just missing my toys, it’s a reality of set design now. The main sets get the less legends, the less flavor, less stuff. And I don’t hate UB, I thought avatar was super fun. But I don’t like the larger effect on the main sets.

In all the right colors for all the giants (lorwyn and Kaldheim for example). Bre is good design, she’s fun, but we have 20 Boros exile commanders, where is the Jeskai giant commander like we have for faeries and treefolk in this set?

I also think it hurts. If we were going to do my little guys so dirty, we should have just made them halflings - at least then they would have commander options. I hope as we continue to explore the actual worlds of mtg, we find what made each special and give each world its due.

To close, I am thrilled we returned to Lorwyn at all - they said the original set sold poorly (shocker, in 2007/2008 during the financial crisis), but it's become deeply beloved by the community over the years and the designs are incredible.

I think the new set is great.

That makes me sad, because I think the UB sets, where we get multiple sets are able to do justice, but I am not sure these dips into the world of MTG can do the same. At least, this did not for me. Not this time.

I know this will come off as a long personal gripe about my personal pet cards and being angry I didn't get my toys (totally fair and you got me), but I also think it speaks to overall challenges with set design. Planes with life and character will lose that, its just necessary

I know we can't shove a 4-set block into a single set, but there were options. We could have had more pre-cons, we could have had a bonus sheet, we could have had a few legends to make sure each typal felt like they had something. Instead of anything, we did nothing.

Reading the design article on the set showed how they were constantly hedging the set, we want it to be kindred, but not too kindred. Have hybrid mana, but not too much, have all the tribes, but some of them will just be underdeveloped. It speaks to just cutting and cutting.
