I believe Emma Stone is owed an apology. She’s one of Hollywood’s most reliable actors, coming off an Oscar win for playing an extremely complex woman, and she’s relegated to mostly being a prop/plot device. I can’t decide if EDDINGTON was made too early or too late. As a film, it’s totally fine. As a political statement, kinda glib. I’m still here for Aster, but it’s my least favorite of his films to date.

I agree, I would have taken some more culture clashes but at the same time dug that it was rooted in “fellowship” rather than the entire thing being black vs white. Very nuanced, Coogler is a smart cookie

Oh totally, it’s not missed on me that Remmick is familiar to this. He’s seen his culture assimilated, so he’s just using tactics he’s seen before (ie: him pretending to be racist to recruit the couple). The songs may not be bad, but the characters didn’t like them, so Remmick adjusted his approach

What’s self defensive, I’m praising the film? I’m sure Coogler does appreciate Irish music. Not saying it’s bad bc it’s irish, I’m talking about the performance of the song. “Rocky Road to Dublin” had more energy and layers of production you’d hear in hip-hop. The whole movie is about assimilation

The way Coogler used culture vulturing in SINNERS is so damn good. Remmick’s first couple of songs were dry, boring, and nobody cared for them. As soon as he’s turned some black folk into vampires, “Rocky Road to Dublin” has all this extra seasoning and it’s fuckin lit! Had me bouncin immediately 🤣
