Seventy-five years ago, Britain helped write the European Convention on Human Rights. It protects fairness, liberty and the rule of law. Those attacking it now are not defending Britain. They are trying to free government from accountability. We must defend it.

@zackpolanski.bsky.social is right. Brexit was a disaster that broke trust and left Britain weaker. Now the same voices want us to leave the European Convention on Human Rights. We should have learned by now what happens when we trust them.

Amazing story in The Times. Reform UK failed to pay VAT to HMRC on its sales (tickets, merchandise). About £400k in all.

Not tax avoidance. Not tax evasion. They just didn't realise when you sell stuff you have to charge VAT.

Nigel Farage faces questions over who funded £885,000 Clacton constituency home A BBC investigation raises questions about how the Reform UK leader's partner paid for a home in his constituency.

‘Five Houses’ Farage has a certain ring. And he owns, or has claimed to own, all of them. Which is four more than Angela Rayner does…

The "problem" with vaccines?

They're so effective at preventing deaths that they create generations of people that question whether disease was a problem in the first place because they have never experienced the horrors of a world without vaccines.

The murder of Charlie Kirk is a tragedy, and a sign of the utter desperation and cowardice of those who could not defeat him in argument. Charlie Kirk has been killed not for espousing extremist views - because he didn't. He has been killed for saying things that used to be simple common sense. He has been killed because he had the courage to stand up publicly for reasonable opinions held by millions and millions of ordinary people both in the US and Britain. The world has a shining new martyr to free speech. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.

Farage should never be interviewed without being forced to answer for failures of Brexit. That the man whose lies fuelled Brexit vote which has cost UK Billions & who said Liz Truss budget was “best Tory budget since 1986” could be trusted on *anything* is mind-boggling #bbclaura

Your Prime Day reminder that half of Amazon warehouse workers struggle with food & housing costs.

A third have had to rely on government assistance like SNAP — which is about to get cut.

If Bezos can spend $50M on a wedding, Amazon can afford to treat its workers with dignity.

Men are extremely keen to explain to me that Britain *needs* a domestic steel production plant and doesn't necessarily *need* universities. Okay. Steel contributed about £1.7bn to the UK economy in 2024. Universities contributed more than £200bn.

NIH cancels its first and largest study centered on women The Women’s Health Initiative has produced numerous influential findings

I don't get how anyone can possibly be okay with ending the WHI. This study has accrued decades of data from 42000 women and it is still going. It helps to address critical research gaps that have been allowed to go unfilled because of durable misogyny and provides invaluable insight into aging.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

-We may have a 10% Brexit 'dividend' but the cost of that dividend is the significant lost output since Brexit and trade dislocation with the EU, which the somewhat more generous US treatment does not even nearly compensate for.
