N.L. terminates MOU that could have seen south coast fjords become conservation area | CBC News The Progressive Conservative government is tearing up a memorandum of understanding that could have created a National Marine Conservation Area on the south coast of Newfoundland.

@govnl.bsky.social has turned down the proposed South Coast Fjords Marine Conservation Area. This is a huge drawback for Canada's #30by30 conservation target.

MCAs benefit both the ecosystem AND the economy, rather than hindering them. More info here: lnkd.in/eZeqVfv8

Here's a new genome from the CCGP: The Lahontan Cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi). This species, endemic to Western North America, may be in danger of extinction.

Inside me there are two wolves. One of them has a 15 genome edits the other 20 genome edits. Neither of them is a dire wolf.

Colossal Bioscience did not revive dire wolves, despite a sensationalist Time Magazine cover story.

Making genetically modified animals that are cosplaying as extinct species is not de-extinction.

One of my first internships was with ME Sea Grant (where I learned R!), and I wouldn't be where I am now without that opportunity. This is devastating for the future of coastal/ marine management in Maine.

Fast and cost‐efficient species identification of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.), brown trout (Salmo trutta), and their hybrids using a single SNP marker A workflow for developing a cost- and time-efficient, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based assay for species and hybrid identification is described. In a reference set (n = 46), the developed a....

Atlantic #salmon, brown #trout and their hybrids can be difficult to distinguish, especially at early life stages. This new DNA-based method can be used to screen lots of individuals to verify the species or detect hybrids! πŸ§ͺ🐟

With a low-cost DNA extraction, it is less than 1 euro / sample.

Jumping salmon.

A study of 632 freshwater fish species from 9,989 locations finds climate warming affects fish abundances, with increases at the poleward edges of species’ distributions and declines at the equatorward edges of species’ distributions. In PNAS: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
