AUKUS: Building confidence in Australia’s submarine pathway Promises need to shift to performance, judged against a published timeline.

Insightful piece from

focusing on the deliverables for AUKUS, and highlighting πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ίβ€™s dubious record on infrastructure building.

My only query is whether current high level issues encourage πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί govt to β€œlean in” to AUKUS? I’m not so sure.

Seeming closure of NARA College Park for researchers.

Despite the ironic cheers from those who’ve had to work there, it’s super worrying.

There is a real risk that if πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ tries to use its position to either improve the deal, or leverage other issues such as wider defence spending, it could rapidly erode that trust.

The real Q is whether πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ acknowledge or really care about that risk

Trust is fundamental to AUKUS - it is what let’s πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ engage in a way that other partners could not.

Across both πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί and πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§leaders are talking a sensible game on defence and strategic policy, but are failing to translate that into action

On 1 level it’s had to see why, but on another, it is clear that public sentiment does not reflect the level of insecurity described by leaders

The basic argument is that the discussion of deterrence in πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί strategic documents is largely meaningless - and intentionally so. It’s fuzziness makes it extremely attractive to politicians, but is corrosive to our strategic debate.
