There are similar formal and informal examples in state judiciaries. New Jersey has had an informal norm along these lines for over a century. And Delaware codified a similar rule in its constitution (art. IV, s. 3).

This is a great brief from the ACLU. I'm glad to see parties emphasizing the supervisory power as another way to enhance constitutional rights.
