I wonder if they ever consider hills/total elevation gain. Some of these walk-zones would require significant hikes uphill to get to their school.

In the article she says most Americans are β€œnever going to step foot in a ballroom over the course of their lifetime” ...β€œBut what they do every single day is try to feed their kids, make sure that they get a job to show up to"

I think she's missing the obvious connection and symbolism here

I'd also be shocked if any of the drivers that passed through the closure stopped at that stop sign at 1st and Howe.

As it is now, steepest slopes of Queen Anne have much higher density than the flatter top

There's a WWI monument in Washington Sq in NYC that has an Abraham Lincoln quote: "For the great republic--for the principle it lives by, and keeps alive--for man's vast future"

These people do not believe there is a principal we live by or that man has a vast future

Fare capping aside, I'd love it if there was a weekly fare at all. Some weeks I ride the bus regularly and some weeks I don't

I'd normally be skeptical too but if he's trying to get the Russians to negotiate, it doesn't make sense to say something so incredibly exaggerated that they would think he has no idea what he's talking about. Unless, of course, the Russians also don't know what the number is.

See also French regions vs US states. Some state borders make sense but others do not - like the entire NYC metro area would make more sense as a single administrative area rather than sub-regions of three separate states

Errol Morris on the Time He Filmed Donald Trump Missing the Point This two-part feature takes as its starting point a conversation between Errol Morris and Donald Trump, in which Trump discusses his favorite movie, Citizen Kane. Part 1 investigated the parallels …

after all these years, the most insightful things I have ever read about Trump was Errol Morris talking about that interview

my impression is that there is a huge block of people who want there to be a system that works (or just seems like it works) and not have to think about it.

The propaganda they consume says that all illegals are violent criminals, so it doesn't square in some of their heads that "good people" would be undocumented.

that's right - I shouldn't have said it would be bad for tax revenue. Just less tax revenue from foreign millionaires who don't actually live in their condos.

I've never been able to go too long without thinking of "The Future Is History" - it gives so much insight into Putin's Russia and also what about it that certain people in the West are trying to emulate

if you build enough new housing that prices actually start dropping, then the foreign rich will see NYC real estate as less of a financial sure-thing and could steer clear unless they actually want to use it as a pied-a-terre. Not a bad thing if the goal is to lower prices, but bad for tax revenue

It's also worth noting - they're not saying "it's the cuisine/food culture - we need to eat better", they're saying "there's a conspiracy to make us fat"

But they could install traffic calming chicanes at the spots the bikes go the fastest and/or where the most pedestrians enter - like near Park Circle or the Lincoln Road entrance

It's their mentality though - they're trying to beat previous Strava records. Spreading them out would be nice but they'd still be very reluctant to slow down or stop for pedestrians wherever they are.

Trump Appointees Take Turns Praising Him in Bizarre Meeting One reporter called it β€œthe most exquisitely awkward public event I’ve ever seen.”

they had these exact same praise sessions in the first term. has anyone from those cabinet meetings ever talked about how they all went down? were they scripted? if so by who?

here's a story about one of these from 2017:
