Ms. Giovanni battled cancer twice before and was still giving readings and performances within the past month. She was 81 years old. She is survived by her wife, Virginia Fowler, her son Thomas, her granddaughter, Kai •and• all of us who were transformed by her spoken and written words.

The legendary Black Arts poet and professor Nikki Giovanni joined the ancestors —December 9, 2024. 29-years to the day from when Toni Cade Bambara joined the ancestors.
Bambara included two of Giovanni’s poems “Woman Poem,” and “Nikki-Rosa,” in her groundbreaking 1970 The Black Woman, An Anthology.
