Happy world book day! …whether you are making, writing, reading, listening, or gazing at a pleasing stack. Or have merely darted an intentional look at one.
Or have ushered a child off to school in whatever they ended up wearing.

So many ways to celebrate πŸ“•πŸ“—πŸ“˜πŸ“™πŸ“–

Trying to remember a short novel which takes place IIRC over 24 hours, much of it in a pub. By Hines/Hynes/Haynes? Written in 1930s or 40s? Bit of a long shot

cheaper than a pint, than a coffee&crosissant, than a portion of cheesy chips, but contains rather more #poetry.

An extremely idle morning being had here. Half term has begun: the alarms are turned off. Various things beckon. But for now, this.

@edithwhartonsoc.bsky.social that was deliciously spooky to see your name appear!

Can you recommend any books/articles about EW’s ghost stories, please? They are so mysterious I’d love to read more about them.

That sounds lovely. Is it a new pattern or an old favourite? I have a jumper in mind but with black yarn so am waiting for better light 🌞

I probably haven’t read enough ghost stories but I haven’t yet read one that features with a group of women / mainly women telling them to each other or an intro of β€œtell us a ghost story, Mrs X” β€œoh OK then.”

So this one is the Venetian #landscapeoffears expansion pack.

It also made me wonder β€” if a pair of gents telling each other ghost stories by a college fireside after a bottle of claret is a trope, where do the women tell their ghost stories?

Just finished The Woman in Black. With every scary story I read, my landscape of fears enlarges β€” now added to it are causeways, small villages, dogs dashing away at the sound of a whistle, burial grounds and another layer for the β€œold empty house” category.

Aha! I hadn’t realised the trilogy-ness. I read RoS long enough ago that it will be nearly like the first time when I get to it. Going in reverse sounds suitably Sebaldian (?)
