To have integrity, an educational system cannot bend to authoritarian attacks on
academic freedom, shared governance, and higher education as a public good, nor can it cede the curricular authority of the faculty. Now is a crucial moment for university communities to reject all forms of anticipatory obedience.
We call on campus administrators to commit to a policy of noncooperation with federal law enforcement absent a judicial warrant or subpoena, and not to provide information to ICE or the DHS about international students other than what is required by law. We want to remind campus administrators that personal and personally identifiable information in University records, and those records themselves, are protected by a
wide variety of privacy laws and University policies, however inadequate. The University is not a policing agency; it is a space where learners and educators need to conduct research and exchange ideas safely. Purdue administrators need to consider the established record of harm that accompanies all armed law enforcement agencies. This is the moment for us as Purdue faculty and staff to build our collective strength by joining the AAUP: https://aauppurdue.org/join-aaup/. Together, we can demand and protect working conditions that aren’t shrouded in a chilling climate of fear, repression,
and hostility towards marginalized people and perspectives on our campus.
