Really excited to share the first paper from my PhD - it’s all about assumptions in modelling and the history of early population genetics… 🧵

An Early View: A new commentary by @andyjmwalton.bsky.social, Dr Aylward, Prof Thomas, and ‪Dr @adamrutherford.bsky.social revisit the intellectual origins of #panmixia, revealing how essentialist assumptions shaped its early adoption in evolutionary theory, long before the Modern Synthesis.

Critics of de-extinction research hit by mystery smear campaign Several researchers who have been critical of Colossal Biosciences’ plans to revive extinct animals say they have been targeted by online articles trying to discredit them

I wonder what former scientist Beth Shapiro thinks about this.

Thorough discussion and dissection of ‘panmixia’ in population genetics - the idea that organisms in a group being studied reproduce randomly with one another. It’s an assumption at the heart of many analyses in population genetics even though true ‘panmictic’ populations are rare.

The History of the Panmictic Population Concept and Its Legacy in Contemporary Population Genetics

Quite niche admittedly, one for the historians of evolutionary thought, and population geneticists.

It's Darwin, Fisher, Weissman, Galton oh so much Galton, and others. but really for you pop gen people, we think it's important in understanding the legacy of using panmixia in contemporary models. Which of course we no longer have to do.

It's the first paper by mine and Mark Thomas' brilliant PhD student Andy Walton, and co-authored with historian of evolution Alex Aylward. We're trying to understand the roots of concepts inherent to population genetics, many of which are outmoded but leave legacies in our current work.

All fair points and yes I agree. I should add the caveat: scientists who aren’t bellends don’t say this.

Scientists don’t say this.

Finding molecules in space that are biomolecules in living organisms only shows that the universe finds chemistry much easier to do than biochemists.
