Players and clubs sign a contract, but aren't just employer and employee (or are they?). Clubs (and fans!) demand loyalty of the players towards the team, but aren't always willing to extend the same loyalty back. Players are extremely privileged, but bought and sold like objects sometimes.

I am not immune to this contradiction myself. I still hate Figo, even if technically he didn't do anything wrong. There are former players I'd happily donate a kidney to (not my own, but still!), and present players I'd just as happily push off a cliff. It can be an emotional subject for many of us.

I think that the thing that bothers me about the ter Stegen situation, and that has bothered me for many years before that, is that there isn't one way of describing the relationship between a player and a club that makes everyone happy.

I've been repeatedly scolded as "not cynical enough" (me!) because Barça should be run like a business and to expect anything else is foolishness, but the moment a player says, "this is my contract and I intend to fulfill it", then won't someone think of the poor football club.

I believe that Barça is acting worse than usual in this matter, and Football Gods know I've seen them and other clubs be shitty before. And now ter Stegen is also acting that way, and the whole thing turns into a public shitshow. Again. We keep doing this.

He doesn't *have* to publicly release his medical records just to help the club find a financial loophole. I believe he might have, if he'd been treated better beforehand, but as it stands, both parties are being spiteful.

He is competitive and obviously wants to be a starter again, as does every other player. I didn't like the semifinal thing, that's true. But trying to stripe him of the captancy and airing all the dirty laundry in the media isn't good behaviour from the club either.

He hasn't said anything about being a starter. Barça want him out, either on another team or injured, so they can register his replacement. He wants to fulfill his contract, which he has every right to do, starter or not.

I hate the situation with ter Stegen. I hate it. I don't have anything insightful to say, except that the club started it by trying to kick him out like he was a mushy avocado instead of a respected player.

Yeah, I agree that we could have a good team for next season already with only homegrown reinforcements, that's why I'm hoping we come out of the transfer window empty-handed.

So disenchanted with Barça's signing and firing methods that I'm rooting for Bayern to sign Luis Díaz, and someone else to sign Marcus Rashford. Just fuck us up, transfer market, we deserve it.
