Author, Y2K: How the 2000's Became Everything (Essays on the Future That Never Was). The NYT called me “lean, nimble, and profoundly depressing,” but I think I’m pretty fun. I have a black cat named Camus and I live in Ann Arbor.

It was bad that we decimated the foreign service in part because it was a way of life that forced Americans to be uncomfortable and imagine how other people might live.

We are the consequences We, collectively, are the condition that makes their defeat inevitable.

I have a new essay out today. For Welcome To Hellworld I wrote about my home, Minneapolis, again; I worked through some thoughts on why the concept of "victory" feels so hollow right now but why it might signal something far more important in the future.

It’s so wild how the paths we take are often due to a combination of the time/place we were born and other sorts of chance

I also looked askance at the second-wave feminism of my mom, finding it to be riven with contradictions. I remember thinking that it would be so much easier to be a stay at home mom than have a career (given America’s workplace culture). Glad I learned about a secret third thing (social democracy).

Anyway, when I was in college, I found the affect and terminology of academia to be off-putting, hypocritical, and teleological. I resented it at first! I still resent it, actually. This resentment would have been channeled nicely into an anti-woke grift.
