it’s not even ungrounded bc one of the most well-known chinese diaspora authors out there has their works focusing on the same time period and directly borrows the names of historical figures and spreads inaccurate info and it just feels like this with each new book

i have a(n actually somewhat reasonable) fear that a chinese diaspora author will write my favourite historical figure (eunuch)(evil)(deeply hated) into their work in a really butchered way to a large clueless audience which taints his image in the anglosphere forever and i have to bear with this

it’s a very weird feeling, language is so strange haha but i hope we can all improve!

ouu i had similar experiences as a kid with cantonese, looking back it really stunted my desire to learn the language because any attempt at speaking it would be extremely embarrassing and had social implications (i still don’t really like it!) it’s hard to suddenly start learning via immersion!

zhao gao from the qin empire novel series by sun haohui! his character has trans undertones if you squint (very unintentional from the author) so it’s a super niche in-joke among friends that he’s trans representation in straight guy historical fiction
