Interesting! How does Bruckner ask hard religious questions through music? I think he does but I don’t have a handle on articulating it.

My favorite saying of the Desert Fathers: β€œA brother sinned and the presbyter ordered him out of church. But Abba Bessarion went out with him saying, β€œβ€˜I too am a sinner.’”

This gives me language and understanding I’ve been blindly searching for, thank you! My intuition says, Balthasar inspired?

"Spontaneously, naturally, your ideal of knowledge will govern your attempts at self-appropriation, and unless your ideal is perfectly correct before you start, it will prevent you from arriving. In other words, there is the need of some sort of a jump, a leap.” - Lonergan

β€œ[I]n all one's questions, and all one's efforts to know, one is presupposing some ideal of knowledge, more or less unconsciously perhaps… our concern in *Insight* is a series of exercises in which we move towards the functionally operative tendencies that ground the ideal of knowledge." - Lonergan

Lonerganiacs out there: After reading the 1958 essay β€œThe Redemption” what do you recommend as helpful follow up reading to further flesh out the meaning of the redemption? By Lonergan, secondary scholarship, or other thinkers?

I’m a novice to Balthasar though fwiw sense the wisdom of a giver of the *Spiritual Exercises* infused in his theology. To me it’s like his theology is setting up the theater and stage for praying the *Exercises*. Balthasar is greatly under-appreciated in Ignatian spirituality circles imo.

I love the way scholarship, art, and existential concern layer in this book toward emergent answers:

β€œWhat is *reality*? So also, what is *history*? And what does it mean, if it is possible, to *speak* either of these? And then, what does it mean to *act* in them?” - @catholickungfu.bsky.social

I’ve been reading Lonergan’s 1958 lecture β€œThe Redemption”. Gives me hope against this shared sentiment. Places the concrete process of receiving and embodying the redemption in relation to the intelligible enhancements theology can provide. Multiple, complex intelligences at work in the redemption

Also weird in a tragic way that Lonergan’s cognitional theory was there the whole time ready to solve these problems. Still there and mostly untapped in the culture.

Communications, education, how else, how better to share these solutions?

Although when I think about going to the gym this morning I find I prefer to be a conceptualist about it. I’m in need of gymnastic conversion.

The last question of the Q and A offers psychic conversion as a helpful frame both for asking this question and for graced action toward concrete healing.

With my new understanding (thank you!) I looked this up tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it, thought you all might too: from Fr Doran’s 2nd volume of TiH. I love the dovetailing of personal value and mission along with the deeper sense of personhood in the mystical body of the triune Christ.

Dug it up. From Fr Whelan’s *Redeeming History*. The Christology moment was an intellectual conversion clincher following upon reading Newman etc… If anyone out there has the energy to explain why 2 natures is at the level of insight and 1 person is at the level of judgment I’d be most grateful!

25.11.2025 18:27 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Does this relate to the two natures, one person hypostatic union in Christ? I read recently that the intelligibility of the two natures and the affirmed judgment of one person was a significant occasion in Lonergan’s own intellectual conversion. Trying to grasp all this and how it fits together…

One of the awesome things about Lonergan’s cognitional theory is the way it can engage, incorporate, and enhance social science. The initial audience for this is likely tiny. But if, for instance, Catholic education adapts the framework I believe its fruits will be abundant in research and practice.

Still contemplating that with love and wonder. Also I’m pondering the last couple questions of the Q & A session: bringing reconciliation in relation to (perhaps sublating) truth, and the role of psychic conversion in the process of healing from structural sin. Fruitful and concrete questions.

Have you watched this yet? The project and its context are all new to me. Feels significant and also emotionally charged. Dr Dadosky gives many thought evoking arguments. This resonates: β€œβ€¦one could say that emergent probability is like the maternal womb for the unfolding of all life…”
