The European Convention on Human Rights was written by British lawyers after the Second World War to protect people from torture, persecution, and abuse of power. It is the backbone of the Good Friday Agreement, guaranteeing equality and peace in Northern Ireland. To abandon it now, as is now being demanded, would be to tear up those protections and betray Britain's promise to uphold human rights at home and abroad.
The UK played a pivotal role in creating the ECHR. Leaving it now would betray that legacy, and destroy the very principles we helped to create.
