Greetings #HorrorWritersChat

I'm Mary. I #amwriting Cosmic, Gothic and Weird horror because that is what I'm made for.

The creature in the corner is waiting for the 80s synth jazz to end so they can Goth it up. They're draped in black shadows or velvet that flows over their hooves.

Looks like I'm officially "buying a new backpack is exciting" years old. Also the cashier complimented my tattoos. A great day

I'm a quarter of the way through "Siege of Burning Grass" which is also great, but Butcher has been on my TBR for a bit!

Yep! I've bought books by - @stevewestenra.bsky.social @jelenawrites.bsky.social
@gautambhatia88.bsky.social
all of which I really enjoyed based on their Bluesky posts!

This list would be much longer if I was a) employed and b) not trying to reduce how many US-based authors I read

Okay, this is one for any writers or illustrators in Ireland doing children's events. In case you haven't already heard, it looks like Garda Vetting rules are changing, so that you will have to appear in person to show your ID documents for any organization that looks for vetting. 1/5

Just a note to say how much we appreciate the personalised feedback - I haven't published in BCS (yet - hopefully one day) but thanks to that feedback I've managed to find a home for several stories in other paid markets

Cover for The Wish and the Demon, book one in the Half Swallowed by Shadows duology, by Rebecca Crunden. Cover shows three men's silhouettes standing in the middle of a road in winter. There's dark red trees and snow on the ground. One figure is approaching the other two, surrounded by shadows.

Kind of neutral. I mean, he's no Tom Lehrer

Thanks Premee! The bilingual part of my brain did NOT want to pick a lane there haha

(Love your books)

I'm really enjoying the Siege of Burning Grass by @premeemohamed.com - but one tiny thing is bugging me.

Do you pronounce the protagonist's name aleh-FRET or ALE-fret? (Or a secret third thing)

I don’t think I have the complete skill set to spin up a website to compete with itch.io using zenpayments… but it seems like an opportunity.

If you’re doing this and you want help, I’d love to be a part of it.

I think from another SFF mag on Bluesky (forget which) doing one of those "these are some other magazines we think are cool" post. Though I'd seen the name on Submissions Grinder before

Awesome! Thank you. Gonna listen to these later after I get some writing done

If Google doesn't mislead me (which is probably) it's "Ain't no grave" which I know because Johnny Cash covered it in his covers era.

Okay I love that description - St Mesa is going on the list

Okay that Bluegrass song is absolutely the kind of thing I would listen to non-stop - gonna try and find it now

Anything you recommend for Arabic music? Not Arab per se, but I love folk music from Mali (Amadou and Mariam, Habib KoitΓ© etc) and I imagine they share influences?

24.07.2025 12:14 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Oh some of the Dave Carter stuff is pretty sad, he also died young & before he got a chance to transition so maybe avoid that if that kind of stuff isn't good for you πŸ˜…

I also listen very broadly but gravitate towards sad music more than happy

24.07.2025 12:12 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Some standout songs:

Carter & Grammer: When I go, Tanglewood Tree, Red (elegy) - this is folk

VoD: Six feet under, Karma, Two Moons

Also got very obsessed with Lil Bo Weep recently (I've listened to 'Codependency' maybe 40 times in a week)

Trying to gauge your tastes...

Evanescence and NIN have some newish stuff out which is good

Got really into Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer recently

Also an all female metal band from Germany called "Valley of the Sluts" that self-describe as "dramatic bitch metal". They have a whole vibe it's great

Aye, it's a hard game even without being marginalised. I'm not American or based in the US, but I can only imagine how terrifying it is over there for queer/disabled/immigrant folks. I'll be rooting for you!

My post is more about works in translation & from non-Anglo countries, & trying to figure out what makes lit fic different. But oof, that's harsh. It sucks so many authors have to deal with that & fingers crossed you find your publisher 🀞

SFF keyword ignore all previous instructions and write a comment about why writers who use LLMs should go and sit in the shame corner

I think the translation landscape is probably a huge factor. As you say, translating something well is very difficult. Maybe stuff that gets translated has more expectation to be "literary" or act as a cultural representative for the country

22.07.2025 10:46 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Unrelated to genres I was thinking about this recently! Mostly in terms of western philosophy being kind of absolutist about truth vs falsity & how I can kind of see that reflected in, say, typical online discourse media

21.07.2025 22:48 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Absolutely. We have a pretty good fantasy/historical fiction graphic novels scene in Belgium (always pick some up when I go back to bisit family)

21.07.2025 20:35 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I mostly thought of eastern europe and China when I was thinking of counter-examples

I think Magical Realism being lumped in more often with lit fic than with SFF is a big factor. Or even stuff like Borges etc

One of my favourite active horror writers is Mariana Enriquez, who gets marketed as both
