Very pleased to see the first article from my PhD thesis published in Planning Theory and Practice.
In the piece, I leverage the concurrent adoption of bicycle equity policies in Mexico City and Toronto to compare how intra-urban differences shape efforts to address infrastructural inequalities.

Graphic with bold text on an orange background, with a "Lewis for Leader" logo below: A Political Instrument of the People.
The NDP has a rich history in Canadian politics. We were born out of a movement of farmers, trade unionists, and feminists in an era where fascism was rising and social solidarity was essential.
Today, we are releasing our plan to once again make the NDP the Political Instrument of the People.

It's a good start, but Metrolinx seriously needs to reduce the number of VP's within their ranks! 115 to 120 per that article is far too many!

Metrolinx sheds 400-plus consultants as agency grapples with growing mandate | Globalnews.ca
Michael Lindsay was tapped to lead the Crown corporation in 2025, tasked with refocusing its mandate and bringing years-delayed transit lines into service for the first time.
Glad to see Metrolinx reducing reliance on expensive third party consultants and building more in-house expertise!
If Ontario is going to spend $70 billion to build out βthe largest transit expansion in North America,β we must build the institutional knowledge to do so effectively & efficiently.

With a lot of Conservative types looking for another right wing mayoral candidate that's not Brad Bradford, things could be looking up for Mayor Olivia Chow's re-election chances but we still can't take anything for granted! For the meantime, pass the popcorn, folks! πΏπ³οΈ #TOpoli

Toronto Port Authority backs Doug Fordβs call to expand Billy Bishop airport for jets
In a letter to provincial Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria, the federally mandated agency that owns and operates the island airport has hailed a potential expansion.
Look what Doug Ford's opening of that can of worms has done! Now the Toronto Port Authority has revived their calls to bring jets at Billy Bishop Airport; something which must NEVER happen! #shame #TOpoli #ONpoli #cdnpoli #NoJetsTO CC @normsworld.bsky.social www.thestar.com/politics/pro...

i spent all summer organizing for dedicated transit lanes against typical toronto nimbys who claimed that "emergency vehicles would get stuck in traffic and more people would die"
anyways, here's real life:

Not feasible. the existing rail corridor to Kingston is too constrained and would require even more expropriations.

$1/day in Toronto and lots of better uses (inc. many willing to pay more). Way past time to charge more for onstreet parking.

Ward 19 Beaches East York 2023 Mayoral results showing Bradford getting 4.66% of the vote in that riding.
A racoon diving into a dumpster.
Thereβs a story going around about how Brad Bradford βcould lead a tight two way raceβ against Olivia Chow.
Which is the funniest take I could have seen today.
A reminder, that he couldnβt even break 10k votes in the last election, and in his OWN ward he couldnβt get 5% of the vote.

How John Toryβs exit, some bad blood β and a Ford β are threatening to shake up Torontoβs mayoral race
As Brad Bradford moves closer to solidifying himself as the consensus centre-right mayoral challenger to progressive incumbent Olivia Chow, he still has hurdles to clear.
Repeatedly describing Brad Bradford as the "centre-right" candidate (4 times) is doing a lot of comms work on behalf of the guy with the baseball bat who votes against Chow more than anyone except Councilor Oppositional Defiance Disorder. @benspurr.bsky.social #TOpoli

Since when did being conservative have to mean being carbrain? Shouldn't being a conservative mean saving money which not having a car - or reducing a household from two cars to one - would achieve in spades? π€·

That still doesn't address the problem that current VIA Rail service is held hostage to the whims of freight rail companies along that Lake Ontario corridor which was why Alto categorically ruled it out.

I was hearing a lot more noise from Gerretsen than from Hsu on the HSR file. To be fair, if I was a Kingston resident or politician, I would be disappointed too about Alto not planning to stop there.

I am aware of @markgerretsen.bsky.social's calls for a stop at Kingston. While not entirely opposition, I recall an earlier article which Alto warned too many changes could derail the project. I just hope this thing gets built sooner rather than later given how long overdue HSR is in Canada.

Fair point. However, a legit question remains when would such an intervention be OK? Requiring UN Security Council approval is increasingly difficult these days with the five permanent members (US, UK, France, Russia, and China) holding veto power.
