I always assumed that she got stuck in a molt. Large spider species like tarantulas can get their molts stuck and die that way. But she's also in a state where it looks like she fell asleep, so maybe she was just sick.

Sorry if this was out of nowhere! I just love velvet ants a lot and haven't seen them since I was small. The ones at home seemed pretty tolerant about being handled, too. I never got stung even when I was picking them up and poking at them. A lot of upset noises and scurrying off when I was done.
