It's interesting. I had the same problem with Doom Eternal. The demons are terrified of you in Doom 2016 and I'm just sitting here nodding along, like, "Yep. I UV-max'd Sunlust. That is indeed me." But then Eternal had that log where the lady orgasmically describes DoomGuy as a god, and I was done.

I guess it's in the delivery, for me? Like Barney being all "Look Gordon, your favourite crowbar!" and Alyx coming on to you as hard as she does. Its hard for me to articulate exactly what it might be, but my lizard brain reads it as inauthentic, and that always makes me reflexively recoil a bit.

You know, I've always wondered how the fuck everyone knew what Gordon Freeman did in Xen, considering the last anyone saw of him was him jumping into a portal.

Mostly the writing. I kinda felt like the narrative was sucking my dick a little bit with how everyone thought Gordon (and by extension me) was this incredible Person Of Significance™️, and that always rubs me the wrong way. I get irrationally uncomfortable with praise that feels unearned.
