They will then hand it in on the day they submit their paper in electronic version. It is an experiment, and hopefully more gratifying than relying on my policing of their footnotes and adding penalties for inaccurate references.
09.10.2025 20:17 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0We have just started. There are 23 students registered in the course. I have only marked one so far. Given that they will do each session in the same notebook, I hope to refer back to previous comments. The idea is that they will then have the notebook as they write their paper.
09.10.2025 20:15 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

If in-class writing, how have you structured it so that students have resources to write while engaging with the texts?
09.10.2025 01:40 — 👍 1 🔁 4 💬 3 📌 0They do not get marks off for spelling or grammar errors, or for not remembering details exactly. I want the focus to be on taking chances and improving the structure of their argument.
09.10.2025 17:12 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Hopefully it will make them more confident for the final paper and underline the importance of the process of learning to write well.
09.10.2025 17:10 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Each session counts for 2% of grade and they get 1% just for handing it in. The idea is to help them structure their thought and to get used to writing on low-stakes assignments. I give feedback to each student (24).
09.10.2025 17:08 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0They don’t have access to their printed course pack. I ask them to first brainstorm key words, underline three that they will use in the answer, create a very short outline and then write an answer of at least two paragraphs
09.10.2025 17:06 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I have also introduced an evaluation involving in-class writing to replace half of the sessions previously devoted to in-class discussion. In each of these sessions, I ask a question on assigned reading that they have to answer in a notebook they hand in

Seems like a good time to remind people that Canada Post will deliver any piece of mail to federal elected officials for FREE.
No stamp necessary!
Just a reminder in case you, oh I dunno, wanna send your elected officials a sternly worded letter a day for a year or something.
Very happy to announce that the

Reminder that if Air Canada cancel your flight out of the UK and say they can't rebook it same day, you can ring them and say:
"You are obliged to check sister carriers."
Then they will magically remember to do so.
This post brought to you by me now flying BA to Toronto, 5hrs later than planned.
