a screenshot from the linked FT article, where milton friendman's grandson (lol) is talking: "Over Zoom, he explains that, as a committed libertarian, he came into the space in the hope of building a state that mirrored his politics. In a democracy, he says, โ€œpower is so dilutedโ€ that the people cannot stop laws being passed that โ€œhelp special interests and harm the massesโ€. Now, he says, he wants โ€œa home for my tribeโ€. To that end, he is attempting to create cities that are run like a for-profit company, rather than by democratically elected officials. โ€œA private venture-backed company is the city operator and [its directors] design the laws and they earn revenue through some combination of rents, taxes, service fees,โ€ he says of his proposed model."

"committed libertarian" wants to build a state that's run like a company. you know, two organizations that famously never curtail individual freedoms.

these people are dumber than anyone can imagine www.ft.com/content/b127...

i'm really losing my mind over this because it feels like we just can't do ANYTHING as a city. we can't build housing, we can't install bike lanes, we can't put in a bus lane, we can't have loading zones, can't build another subway line. just a city of NIMBYs co-opting social justice language

the street plans for 31st street in astoria, with the top one being what exists and the bottom one being what was planned and basically implemented. on top, there's a 13' parking lane, then a 3' column for the elevated subway, then two 14' moving lanes, then another 3' column, then a 13' parking lane.

on bottom is the redesign, which has an 8' bike lane, a 3' buffer zone, an 8' parking lane, two 11' moving lanes, another 8' parking lane, and then a 3' buffer and an 8' bike lane. HOW IS THIS CONTROVERSIAL????

supposedly the fire department complained they can't... what, get their trucks into an 11' bike lane/buffer zone? if the parked cars then the NYFD should advocate for their removal, not removing clear space!

not only was the lane basically installed, but the bike lane *didn't remove parking or driving lanes*. we're at a point in NYC where a fucking souvlaki truck who "needs" to park in a specific placeโ€”using public space for their private businessโ€”can undo traffic calming

โ€œthank god the shitty souvlaki truck can clog this street so they can hook their generator up to the strip club instead of making the street saferโ€ thought no one

my first interview at tv guide back in 2012 was with christina hendricks and i felt so bad for both of us because it was pegged to an episode airing 2.5 weeks down the line. i wasn't allowed to see any unaired episodes and she wasn't allowed to talk about basically anything in the episode
