i'm really losing my mind over this because it feels like we just can't do ANYTHING as a city. we can't build housing, we can't install bike lanes, we can't put in a bus lane, we can't have loading zones, can't build another subway line. just a city of NIMBYs co-opting social justice language

the street plans for 31st street in astoria, with the top one being what exists and the bottom one being what was planned and basically implemented. on top, there's a 13' parking lane, then a 3' column for the elevated subway, then two 14' moving lanes, then another 3' column, then a 13' parking lane. on bottom is the redesign, which has an 8' bike lane, a 3' buffer zone, an 8' parking lane, two 11' moving lanes, another 8' parking lane, and then a 3' buffer and an 8' bike lane. HOW IS THIS CONTROVERSIAL????

supposedly the fire department complained they can't... what, get their trucks into an 11' bike lane/buffer zone? if the parked cars then the NYFD should advocate for their removal, not removing clear space!

not only was the lane basically installed, but the bike lane *didn't remove parking or driving lanes*. we're at a point in NYC where a fucking souvlaki truck who "needs" to park in a specific place—using public space for their private business—can undo traffic calming
