That being said, a competitive primary can make the eventually winner a better candidate. If Talarico has any chance of winning the general, a primary could help.

Talarico otoh, provides an interesting test case of a different kind of Democrat. A youth pastor who talks about the struggles of everyday people is not exactly what one thinks of when they think of a typical Democrat.

Crockett doesn't have much chance in a general election, even against Paxton. This likens back to the tea party primary cycles of 2010 and 2012 - when Rs nominated candidates who almost certainly cost them some winnable senate seats - Sharron Angle, Christine O'Donnell, Todd Ak8n, Richard Mourdock.
