Thank you @romgothsam.bsky.social for curating another excellent list of stories and poems to celebrate spooky month. I can't believe we are at the end already!
Now I need to mull over which ones are going in my top 5 - the truly difficult part!
When the cold mist comes with its needle-fine teeth, you must lie very, very still. You must close your eyes and silence your breath. Empty your mind of everything, save images of darkness. Think of night and rain and worms crawling through earth. The coldness of marble tombs. The breath of ancient sepulchers. Imagine yourself dead. Pretend to be dead. This is the only way to survive.

#AScareADay Day 30 β Bleeding Hearts by Suzan Palumbo
Not a scary one but I did love it. I really like the idea of all the plants growing from thr pain that people want to let go of.
I would also very much recommend the author's short story collection, Skin Thief. Tis excellent
The Bayou illustrated cover art: a minimalist black church surrounded by bare trees in front of a full moon or a pale sun, with a staring alligator underneath. Queer 1930s southern gothic horror.
In the Pit of Your Stomach: An Interactive Horror Story illustrated cover art. Comic book style drawing of a ramshackle house and shed in an overgrown yard. Stone steps lead to a pit under the house where a giant skeleton lays. A skinny humanoid figure creeps out from behind the house. Colours are solid blacks and sickly yellow-greens. A CYOA choose-your-path horror story.
Flesh and Bone: an MM horror romance novella by Arden Powell. Cover art: yellow silhouettes of two cowboys on horseback ride inside the body of a huge black dog on a crimson background under an outline of the Rocky Mountains. Gay 1800s gothic western horror-romance with werewolf body horror.
The Faerie Hounds of York illustrated cover art: a woodcut-style wolf rearing up against a dark green background. Gay 1800s gothic romance with a bittersweet ending.
It's Halloweentime! Come get some queer horror for the weekend! Southern gothic, historical western, horror-romance, folkloric fae, and it's all gay π€ππ

I think a lot about the chance we had at the start of COVID to finally become a more compassionate, collectivist nation, and how profoundly we were failed not only by the sociopathic greed of the ruling class but by each other.
It doesnβt mean we wonβt get there, but the lost opportunity haunts me.
Image: The library of an ancient castle. A full moon shines through a gothic window. A vampire creeps up behing a carpenter. Caption: "It had not been easy, but the Count was glad that he had resisted drinking the carpenter's blood until his beautiful new bookshelves were complete."

This is it. We know exactly how to fix the climate crisis. We have all the technology and we know what actions we need to take. What people are hoping for is a technology that will fix everything without us having to change anything at all, and that's a fantasy. We have to do the work.
30.10.2025 10:19 β π 331 π 104 π¬ 1 π 1A huge, rounded robot with a cluster of writhing, banded tentacles at its base, each tipped with a clawed, shapeless hand floats in space. It has odd fins on its body and looks like it just woke up. It's looking balefully down at the tiny form of Spacebot - a spherical robot with solar panel wings, like a satellite - drifting across its bulk.
929) Eldritchbot. Spacebot investigates a signal in the cold void of space and there it finds, drifting and quiescent, a vast and terrible being, a slumbering star-god of unfathomable antiquity which now turns its malign indifference towards this mote of life. #SmallRobotsRemonstered #Halloween

#AScareADay Day 29 β The Portrait of Sal Pullman by Lonnie Nadler & Abby Howard
A little change of pace today with a webcomic where an artist is tormented by his own creation. Loved the art work...the splashes of red in a mostly black and white comic was well done.
Illustration by Lawrence, from A 1946 issue of FAMOUS FANTASTIC MYSTERIES. Seen from behind, a figure in military-style dress stands atop a high rocky pinnacle. A huge spectral figure of Death, depicted as a skeletal Grim Reaper with scythe, towers in the sky before him.
