We know so little about the emotional experiences of #autistic and #ADHD young people who struggle to attend or are excluded from school even though this group is at much higher risk of mental health difficulties and poor life chances. We want to change this.

Thus, we consider whether entrainment may be a tool to support positive social outcomes, such that those who are dissimilar in EQ may "ground" their interaction with low-level movement entrainment. 🧵4/4

There are two scatterplots. The scatterplot to the left shows that, with greater partner differences in EQ scores, the conversational partners demonstrate greater hand movement similarity. The scatterplot to the right shows that, with greater partner differences in EQ scores, the conversational partners demonstrate greater head movement similarity.

We found that, for both head and hand movements, greater differences in EQ scores were associated with greater entrainment. However, There was no significant relationship between f0 entrainment and EQ score differences. 🧵3/4

We used dynamic time warping to measure entrainment of head motion between speakers, and hand motion between speakers, and we calculated maximum f0 difference between interlocutors in question-response sequences. We further measured partner differences in Empathy Quotient (EQ) scores. 🧵2/4

How taking part in research has benefited me.
As well as being an Autistic autism researcher I take part in other people’s research studies.
This is partly altruistic as I want to reduce inequalities and improve things for future generations, but I also gain a great deal from it personally.
